PROJECT 1: CHARACTERIZATION OF RADIOACTIVE AEROSOLS NEAR A COASTAL NUCLEAR FACILITY AND ASSESSMENT OF THEIR IMPACT.
THE OBJECTIVES OF THIS PROJECT ARE TO DETERMINE THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE RADIOACTIVE AEROSOLS CREATED NEAR A COASTAL NUCLEAR FACILITY AND TO ASSESS THEIR RADIOLOGICAL SIGNIFICANCE.
PROJECT 2: THE ASSESSMENT OF DOSES FROM NATURAL RADIONUCLIDES IN DRINKING WATERS AND FROM THE DISPOSAL OF WASTE PHOSPHOGYPSUM AND ELEVATED NATURAL ACTIVITY.
THE OBJECTS OF THE PROJECT ARE TWOFOLD: FOR WATERS, TO DETERMINE THE LEVELS OF NATURAL RADIONUCLIDES AND TO ASSESS THE RESULTING DOSES OF THE POPULATION; FOR PHOSPHOGYPSUM, TO DETERMINE, BY MEASUREMENT AND MODELLING, THE DOSES TO THE PUBLIC FROM THE DISPOSAL OF WASTE AT COASTAL SITES IN THE UK.
PROJECT 3: A STUDY OF METHODS FOR REMEDYING AND PREVENTING HIGH RADON LEVELS IN DWELLINGS.
THE OBJECTIVES OF THIS PROJECT IS TO TEST A NUMBER OF METHODS FOR REDUCING THE CONCENTRATIONS OF RADON AND ITS DECAY PRODUCTS IN INDOOR AIR IN EXISTING DWELLINGS AND FOR PREVENTING HIGH LEVELS IN FUTURE DWELLINGS. FOR EXISTING DWELLINGS, BOTH TEMPORY AND PERMANENT MEASURES WILL BE CONSIDERED, BUT PREVENTIVE MEASURES WILL NEED TO BE OF A PERMANENT NATURE.
Measurements on open pore foams showed that they can be used as a practical low impedance air filtration medium capable of sampling virtually all particles with diameters greater than 5 um. Their inability to sample smaller particles is not a serious drawback because conventional sampling techniques can be used.
The measurements also showed the potential for size fractionation in the 5-100 um range by using multilayer open pore foams or coarser foams for the initial size selection. Particles have a net vertical velocity away from the inlet which must be overcome before they can be sampled. Simple kinetic arguments show that, with the volume sampling rate used, the angle of vertical divergence would have to be reduced to approximately 2 degrees.
