Obiettivo
The construction and operation of a plant for biogas production from potato processing waste.
For complexe waste substrates containing solid matter an increase in production rates for microbial methane formation out of organic waste compounds is reached by a two-stage reaction. The separation of the acidification stage and the methane forming stage leads to different biocenoses in the respective reactors with a higher specific catalyst (biomass) quantity in comparison with single-stage plants. Another advantage of the two-stage reaction is its higher process stability. The gradual scale up of an anaerobic waste-water process has been realized with this example of the microbial methane formation out of a potato sludge (original waste water).
After the separation of potato peels the waste water contains solid matter i.e. small potato pieces and flakes (0,5 cm in diameter) and it contains starch granules and considerable quantities of potatocell agglomerates. The solid matter content is subject to heavy fluctuations in total concentration and in composition.
Before the construction of the full-scale plant in Munchen/Germany extensive laboratory and pilot plant tests have been performed.
In the full-scale plant, due to the numerous delays in the authorizing procedure, in the construction of the foundations and during start-up of operation, comprehensive measurements could not be made until March 1987. The plant was put into operation with sewage sludge taken from the tower of the sewage treatment plant Munchen-Grossharden. As had been the case with the pilot plant, the production of gas started shortly after the plant had been put into operation.
Upon conclusion of the studies in March 1987, the waste quantity passed through was approx. 80 m3/d (performance planned 240 m3/d) and the gas production approx. 0.3 m3/kg oTS (0.6 - 0.7 m3/kg oTS had been planned). As the start-up phase is 6 - 8 months, a stable operation of the plant could only be reached in the 87/88 season. Within the period from May 87 to September 87, the production was at a standstill.
The process used is a two-stage agitated tower reactor system with completely separate fermentation and methane producing stages. The flow of substrates against special built-in elements in each stage permits a specifically defined substrate shear rate. At the same time an internal phase separation (solids/liquid), adapted to the type of solids to be separated (second stage biomass/first stage substrate), takes place in the shearing field. These can be adjusted to allow maximum conversion rates for specific bacteria, guaranteeing the continuous extraction of gas (shearing of gas/solids).
The purpose of the first process stage is the total fermentation of organic solids. This fermentation is supported by the adaptation of pH, T, and shearing.
Only the solids where hydrolysis is repressed by fermentation products in the first stage are transported into the second stage with the dissolved organic solids. This is achieved by a differential separation of the retention time of solids andliquid.
In the second process stage only acetogenic and methane-generating reactions take place, hampered by only a few hydrolytic reactions. Conderably higher conversion rates (i.e. increased gas production per volume unit) can be achieved. The entire process takes place in the thermophilic range and is controlled by the regulation of pH in the second stage, thereby maintained at maximum conversion and in the stable pH range.
