DEVELOPMENT OF AN UNDERSTANDING OF MATERIALS PROPERTIES UNDER THE COMBINED INFLUENCE OF CREEP, FATIGUE AND OXIDATION

Obiettivo

Studies on the effects of forging parameters on the microstructure were performed for the nickel-base disc U720L1 resulting in forgings which met the requirements of aero-engine discs.

A total of about 480 specimen tests have been performed allowing the description of disc-relevant material properties in the regime where interactions of creep, fatigue and oxidation can be experienced. In addition to the relevance of data for the two materials concerned, the application can be extended to other materials since the data can be considered to be generic for titanium and nickel-base alloys.

Component tests on model discs have been performed to determine the cyclic crack initiation and propagation life under dwell and non-dwell conditions. These tests results were used to check the applicability of material models to predict component behaviour with the aim to validate these models. In some of these tests the deviations between predicted and actual cyclic lives was unexpectedly high. The failure analyses performed for these cases revealed technological influences specific to component testing such as surface conditions, material defects etc.

For many material properties a number of different models were suitable for representing the behaviour sufficiently. However, the project has identified areas where neither of the models described the material behaviour adequately, and future work will be necessary.

The most comprehensive description of the elasto-plastic material behaviour could be achieved with the constitutive models Bodner-Partom and Chaboche. The computer programs developed for the fitting of parameters and material simulation proved to be valuable tools in predicting material behaviour of specimens and discs.
The aim of the project is to provide a tool to extend the use of engine components subjected to the combined influence of creep, fatigue and oxidation.

The aim shall be achieved by following major steps :

1. Specimen tests to create a generic data base for two classes of disc alloys (nickel-base and titanium alloys) to describe material behaviour at high temperatures under various testing parameters in the transition regime between creep and fatigue.

2. Component tests (cyclic spin pit tests on model disc) to study material behaviour under creep/fatigue/oxidation under realistic conditions of engineering practice.

3. Selection of suitable material models

4. Application of experimental results to fit the constants of the material models

5. Application of the models for the prediction of the cyclic spin pit tests

6. Assessment of the alternative models with respect to the representation of experimental data, applicability to practical design procedures and accuracy of life prediction

7. Validation of models
