Safety Related Fault Tolerant Systems in Vehicles

Obiettivo

Objectives and content
Competiveness of European vehicle industry is highly dependent on ever increasing safety standard, such as intelligent driver assistance. It is obvious, that in the medium term this only will be possible by increased usage of the latest achievements in electronic components. The greatest potential lies in the replacement of mechanical backup systems by fault-tolerant electronic systems. These so called "x-by-wire systems" (steer-by-wire, brake-by-wire etc.) promise higher safety, and significantly more cost-effective solutions.
No single vehicle manufacturer has up to now introduced safety related x-by-wire systems without mechanical backup. The European vehicle industry has to offer European wide accepted solutions, and to set standards for highly reliable x-by-wire systems to remain competitive. A common approach towards safety certification and clear legal requirements is necessary to avoid European fragmentation and uncoordinated and parallel research.
This has been clearly recognized by EUCAR (European Council for Automotive Research and Development), and laid down in the EUCAR masterplan 1). As a result, a consortium has been established to come up with solutions which satisfy the special needs of the vehicle industry. As the main problem is not the availability of solutions for fault-tolerant systems, but their applicability to the special constraints of the vehicle industry (mass production, certification rules etc.), the consortium mainly consists of vehicle manufacturers and suppliers. Nevertheless, special care has been taken to make the latest technological achievements available to the consortium. On one hand, the consortium includes some partners with extensive experience not only in the automotive industry but also in the fields of aerospace, railway, ships etc. This know-how is available to the consortium. On the other hand, the consortium includes universities with international reputation in the field of fault-tolerant systems.
The proposed project will define a general architecture for x-by-wire systems. It will demonstrate the feasibility of the architecture in a steer-by-wire demonstrator without mechanical backup. Additionally, recommendations for certification and drafts for standardisation (ISO, SAE) will be prepared. Broad dissemination will give the European automotive, and other related industries, a significant strategic advantage.
