Commercial aircraft - design for crash survivability

Obiettivo

Objectives and content:
The objective of this work programme is to develop the technology for the design of composite airframes with maximum safety with respect to potentially survivable crash scenarios. This is to be achieved by studying material characteristics and failure criteria for composites, develop material models and implement into analysis codes. These advances are then validated by modelling failure of known structures (boxes) and comparing the modelling to structural tests. Validated methodology is then applied to airframe composite belly structures of the A320 and of a commuter aircraft. Again the simulations will be validated by structural tests.

Advance in modelling occupants will be made by implementing a finite element model for occupants, to take the place of the hitherto rigid dummy models. The finite element model should allow occupant injuries to be synthesised. Loading from A320 and commuter belly structure simulation will be used to assess occupant responses. The technology developed and embodied into analysis codes and guidelines form parts of the deliverables. Methodology, material properties and results of simulation and tests will enable participants to enhance European capabilities in this technology area, which will gain widespread exploitation as composites are used more and more in primary airframe structures.
