Highly insulating and light transmitting aerogel glazing for super insulating windows (HILIT+)

Obiettivo

Objectives and problems to be solved:
The objective deals with "aero gel process optimisation". The general goal is to demonstrate that the elaboration process, developed during the recent HILIT project, permits to obtain a significant amount of light transmission, insulating and transparent 15-20 mm monolithic and crack-free materials through a reasonably fast and reproducible process. The applicative part of this project aims at elaborating, studying and optimising "state-of-the-art" (0.5 W/m2 K) aero gel glazing for windows. An important issue is the risk of outside condensation and rime and its avoidance. The final aero gel window shall be optimised with regard to its production and performance in view of the technical, economical and life cycle aspects.
Description of the work:
"Aerogel process optimisation" works are based on sol-gel optimisation of the wet gels, theoretical and experimental study of the supercritical CO2 drying, mid-scale extraction tests, theoretical scaling effect study, pre-industrial reproducibility study of the whole process and large-scale automation, production of aero gel sheets and cost material analysis. In order to guide the aero gel development, produced samples are characterised with respect to optical, mechanical, thermal and surface properties. For the same reason, the aero gel glazing prototypes are characterised optically (transmittances and colouring) and thermally as well as with respect to sound attenuation. The glazing works is mainly based on elaboration of prototypes, and in brief, it concerns: Heat treatment of the aero gel for increasing the solar and daylight transmittances and might be one of several measures to reduce the drying time at the aero gel production. Analysis of the aero gel window, taking into account the state of the art framing systems and the near market ones, will be also carried out. Furthermore, investigation of outside condensation and rime on the window and measures to reduce these effects will be dealt with. Through out the project, the research will be closely monitored and guided by an economical and life cycle analysis in order to improve the feasibility of aero gel windows.
Expected results and exploitation plans:
For the aero gel process part, it is expected that the main result is the development of a technical and economical optimised process at pre-industrial level for aero gel sheets suited for super insulating glazing and that the process is shown feasible by production of around 20 m² aero gel. The developed aero gel glazing will prove to possess an overall U-value below 0.5 W/m² K and mounted in suited frame, the aero gel window has an equivalent U-value.
