Our obligation in the project was to establish and maintain a local ICAMS statio equipped with the EASY Geographical Information System, a GIS package exploiting a data bank containing all the remote-sensing, institute, historical and ancillary information related to the local trial site. In this context, we trained NCMR personnel on the EASY software, collected and incorporated in the data base ancillary and historical data, and kept the system operational by daily incorporating any satellite or in-situ information available throughout the experiment. Based on the satellite images and the EASy inherent-now algorithms, we estimated primary production rates for the test-site, produced maps of all parameters of interest, and proceeded to qualitative assessment of the, performance of satellite information and by-products in relation to the field measurements.
An important task in ICAMS is to specify and develop inexpensive and practical field survey systems for providing information from coastal viding surface measurements to be used to derive meaningful water quality information from coastal waters. The use of buoys and/or ship surveys to provide proximal measurements to assist in calibration exercises is important. The primary requirement for the buoy deployment within ICAMS is for the collection and reporting of data to validate the satellite derived products (i.e. "Core instrumentation", see Description of results # 1). In addition to this 'Core instrumentation", environmental (site specific) instrumentation will provide data to improve and enhance the quality and scope of ICAMS products specifically adapted for the study of phenomena affecting the water quality of each site. In the North Adriatic, the environmental instrumentation is addressing the problem of Eutrophication along the coast Emilia-Romagna due to the Po river.
The EOS Catalogue and Browse System exists as a commercial product and has been developed and enhanced over approximately 4 years. The product is a catalogue for various units of satellite data, including SAR. The CBS also allows the user to browse through the catalogue to access the imagery required. There are two versions available; CBS v2 and the new version 3 which has been written in JAVA. IMDC were granted access via the internet, to the CBC v3 server, which is based at EOS offices in Farnham, Surrey, UK. for the duration of ICAMS. This access to the CBS server for IMDC was granted as the dataset for IMDC was the most complete amongst all the partners. All partners were supplied with the disseminator during the early stages of the project, but a problem with licensing disabled the software and stopped it working. This prompted the further development work on the CBS JAVA application to create a platform for ingestion of specific ICAMS data, not just the EO data work on the CBS for all partners, but was successfully trialed with IMDC, at a late stage in the project.
