MODELLING CHANGES IN CLIMATE DUE TO ENHANCED CO2

THE UNDERSTAND THE DYNAMICAL RESPONSE OF THE ATMOSPHERE TO THE EXPECTED GLOBAL WARMING.

DOUBLING CO2 LEADS TO CHANGE IN STRATIFICATION, TEMPERATURE GRADIENT, TROPOPAUSE HEIGHT, WINDS AND MOISTURE CONTENT ALL OF WHICH MAY BE EXPECTED TO LEAD TO CHANGES IN THE BEHAVIOUR OF INDIVIDUAL SYNOPTIC SYSTEMS, STORMS TRACKS AND LARGE-SCALE STATIONARY WAVES. THESE CHANGES WILL BE INVESTIGATED USING IDEALISED NUMERICAL MODELS. BASED ON THE IDEAS ALREADY DEVELOPED AND NEW RESEARCH SUGGESTED BY THE STUDY, THE CHANGES FOUND BY THE MET OFFICE AND LMD WHEN CO2 IS DOUBLED WILL BE DIAGNOSED. IF APPROPRIATE, FURTHER SHORT EXPERIMENTS WILL BE CARRIED OUT USING THE MET OFFICE AND LMD MODELS.IF THE PHYSICAL REASONS FOR THE LINKAGES BETWEEN THE VARIOUS CHANGES CAN BE ESTABLISHED, THEN THE RESULTS WOULD ACHIEVE MORE CREDENCE.IN THIS WAY, REASONS FOR ANY DIFFERENCE IN THE RESULTS OBTAINED BY THE MET OFFICE AND LMD SHOULD BE CLARIFIED.

THE RESEARCH IS OF PARTICULAR IMPORTANCE AS GENERAL CIRCULATION STUDIES MOVE TOWARDS A DISCUSSION OF REGIONAL CHANGES.
