Measuring co2 from space exploiting planned missions 2001-2004

Obiettivo

To satisfy both scientific objectives and the political imperatives of climate negotiations, an integrated global observing system is required. We propose to develop and test algorithms to retrieve CO2 from satellite instruments. We will assess the accuracy and precision, and test the utility of the data for inferring surface CO2 exchange fluxes. Several instruments scheduled for deployment in the immediate future provide an opportunity to prototype the use of space-borne CO measurements. These instruments, IASI , SCIAMACHY and AIRS were not designed force measurements but as a result of their spectral characteristics provide capability, when used with independent measures of the temperature profile (from the microwave instrument AMSU). We will compare remote sensing and inverse approaches with approaches based on 4-dimensional data assimilation. Retrieved concentrations and fluxes will be evaluated against conventional observations.
