Improved reservoir water destratification (AQUAERATION)

Obiettivo

Scientific objectives and approach:

The research & development project which will be carried out over a two year period, will involve manufacturing several model & prototype Aquaerator units & running a series of laboratory tests & an extended programme of trials in Thames water's Wraysbury reservoir. These tests & trials will define the most effective Aquaerator design & provide the necessary database with which to compile the integral computer model. The research will also characterise the various technical factors associated with the operation of reservoirs in a variety of climatic conditions with particular emphasis on those factors, which govern the growth of blue-green algae which is an area of great concern throughout the EU in view of the inherent & intolerable pollution hazard that such organisms represent. The final task of analysing & modelling all of the gathered research data will be critically important in view of the objective to market the Aquaerator & its associated software to end users involved in processing fresh, waste & even salt water internationally.
Description of the research tasks:
1.1 Characterisation of existing destratification & aeration devices
1.2 Characterisation of the technical factors associated with algal growth
2.1 Design & manufacture of several scale model Aquaerators
2.2 Design & manufacture of the dedicated Aquaerator control system
2.3 Design & manufacture of several prototype Aquaerators
3.1 Development of the mathematical model to be used in the main trials
3.2 Preparation for the series of main reservoir trials
3.3 An extended series of trials using Aquaerators in Wraysbury reservoir
4.1 Detailed analysis of the results of the operational trials
4.2 Detailed production specification for the commercial Aquaerator
4.3 Project reporting & dissemination of the results of the research

Problems to be solved:

The SME co-ordinator's experience in trying to destratify & aerate reservoirs to inhibit noxious, toxic & damaging algal growth using largely ineffective 30 year old us technology has lead him to design an innovative device (called an Aquaerator throughout this document) which he believes will be 50% cheaper to make & far more effective than the existing old fashioned alternatives. The objective of the research is to manufacture several model & prototype Aquaerators & carry out laboratory tests & trials in a Thames Water reservoir to perfect the commercial design & also develop a computer model which will enable reservoir operators to replicate conditions in any given reservoir so that the number & location of the Aquaerator units can be specified to treat the stored water

Expected Impacts:

Milestones:
1) Theoretical confirmation of the Aquaerator's design effectiveness
2) Successful production of test prototypes
3) Delivery of field trial Aquaerators
4) Successful test site commissioning
5) Effective rapid destratification during the trials
6) Successful mathematical model definition
7) Complete Aquaerator specifications
8) Final project reports
Exploitation: The expected project success will entail AMG securing patent & IP rights & forming a group joint marketing venture.
