Obiettivo
The aim of this project is to investigate the kinetics and mechanisms of heterogeneous reactions involving interfaces containing sulfuric acid. Ultimately we intend to determine the kinetics and mechanisms of a set of stratospherically and tropospherically relevant reactions, which have high thermodynamic potentials to occur heterogeneously at interfaces such as aqueous aerosols. Specifically we will investigate the uptake kinetics and chemical transformation of sulfur dioxide into sulfuric acid on aerosols containing hydrogen peroxide. We will then study the influence of solvated sulfuric acid on the uptake of ammonia in water droplets. Eventually we will direct our attention to the mechanism of the reaction between sulfur dioxide and nitric acid believed to proceed on low-temperature water surfaces in the atmosphere and to result in the formation of sulfuric and nitrous acid.
To investigate the uptake kinetics we will design a flow-tube system, which will be fitted with windows suitable for FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared) detection near its exit. The size-distribution of the aerosol will be measured by an Electrical Low-Pressure Impactor, which will also allow us to monitor compositional changes with size. Thin-film studies, performed using the FT-RAIR set-up (Fourier Transform Reflection-Absorption Infrared) operational at UCC, will enable us to improve our understanding of the reaction mechanisms especially in terms of the intermediates involved. Designing and operating the new UCC apparatus described above will enable me to implement the knowledge of atmospheric heterogeneous reactions I acquired during my Ph.D. studies. I welcome the opportunity to benefit from the use of the ucc thin-film FT-RAIR apparatus and become trained in a spectroscopic technique internationally recognised as important in the field of atmospheric studies. The Sodeau group was the first to use such a methodology and the chance to work in his team.
