Obiettivo
Summer smog is a widespread and chronic problem within the Community. In order to reduce the levels of oxidants, several EU-directives have been adopted which are intended to regulate primary emissions. For volatile organic compounds (Vacs) from industrial solvent applications, this is expected to be met by switching to water soluble, poorly volatile, long chain oxygenated species. However the troposphere fate of such compounds is mostly unknown, especially when considering secondary aerosol formation and multiphase oxidation processes. The aim of this initiative is to provide quantification and prediction of future trends in concentrations of the chemically and radioactively active species such as ozone (greenhouse gas) and aerosols, and in particular for the fine fraction of particles and their precursors (formation of secondary aerosols) related to anthropogenic emissions changes resulting from a change from traditional to oxygenated solvents.
