Problems to be solved
The interactions between the atmosphere, forest and coastal zones are investigated by continuous field measurements using infrastructures in Finland, Denmark and Ireland. The work packages include:
i) the maintenance and development of infrastructures, inter-calibrations, gap filling and a database;
ii) the formation and growth of aerosols, their sources and radiative properties;
iii) trace gas and aerosol fluxes between ecosystems and the atmosphere;
iv) the coupling of atmospheric chemistry and aerosol processes;
v) the carbon and water cycles of vegetation and soil.
Scientific objectives and approach
The general objectives of the project are:
i) to carry out continuous field measurements on the observation of atmospheric compounds and properties with regard to cross-disciplinary environmental problems and to offer an accessible database and access to the different research stations to the scientific community;
ii) to produce results on the formation and growth of aerosols and the coupling of these processes with atmospheric chemistry;
iii) to produce results on trace gas (CO2, H2O, O3, NOx) and aerosol fluxes;
iv) to produce results on ecosystem processes and responses with regard to carbon and water cycles of vegetation and soil. The objectives will be fulfilled by means of continuous field measurements on atmosphere-biosphere interactions and the maintenance and operation of field research stations. Every effort will be made to ensure that measurements do not include a large number of gaps and that data processing systems are reliable. Microphysical, physico-chemical and biological knowledge is combined in the research.
Expected impacts
The research contributes to the understanding of global change and climate by providing information on the pathways of aerosol formation and growth, and on regional carbon budgets and their temporal variation. Access to the facilities is offered to the scientific community and a public database will be available via web pages as a final deliverable following the end of the project. Trans-national use is encouraged. Modellers of atmospheric processes and biosphere-atmosphere interactions are the most important scientific target group. The data is relevant to assessments by IPCC, to the verification of the Kyoto protocol and to measures to control and mitigate emissions of gaseous and particulate pollutants.
