A HANDBOOK AND A TRAINING COURSE FOR CHOOSING, PROPOGATING, PROTECTING AND UTILISING CYPRESS IN MEDITERRANEAN REGIONS

Obiettivo

The general objective is to provide foresters, farmers, landscape managers and decision makers with updated practical information on all steps of stand, windbreak and individual tree establishment, as well as management, silvicultur and use of cypress in Mediterranean regions. specific objectives are to publish a practical handbook and to organise a training course both devoted to practitioners.

This two year concerted action (1997-1998) addresses topic 454 of area 4: "afforestation, sustainable management of forests, integration of functions, agro-forestry".

The handbook will include practical information on the following aspects: (I) the genus Cupressus, (2) biology, (3) best adapted forest reforestation material according to site and use, (4) production of planting stock, (5) principal diseases with special attention to bark canker, genetic control, (6) principal insect pests with special attention to seed and cone insects, biological control, (7) yield of natural and planted stands, (8) wood technology and use. The information will originate from the current R&D project AIR 3 CT 93 1675 (1994-97) and from a literature review. The co-ordinator and all authors are the same scientists as in this AIR project. This 120 page book will be published in five versions (Greek Italian, French, Portuguese and English, 600 copies of each).
The training course ll-e devoted to teehnieians and engineers belonging to the whole cypress production ehain: nursery managers, technicians in forestry and agriculture administrations, forest health regional specialists, farmers, forest managers, saw mill engineers, ate. The 30 trainees will originate from Greeee, Italy, Franee and Portugal and other countries around the Mediterranean sea provided non Europeans find funds for attending the eourse. The five day training course content will be a combination of lectures, practical activities, field tours and industry visits. It will take place in Tuseany, Italy, in Deeember 1998. It will be based on the information ineluded in the handbook which trainees will take home in order to beeome trainers in their respective region.

Benefits will be double.

(I) Social and psychological. Most of the information on cypress, particularly thanks to previous EU projects, is available in confidential reports and scientific articles most often written in English. The handbook and the training course will be multilingual and practical.

(2) Economical and environmental. Cypress is the best alternative to other Mediterranean conifers like the fire susceptible Aleppo pine or the Mat-ucoccuAs destroyed maritime pine. It is much more adaptable to diverse soil types than these species, its dense crown covers the ground and reduces the development of fire transmitting grasses. Its tolerance to drought is a result of a long natural selection in dry regions. Cypress is a multipurpose tree. Being evergreen it is widely used as a windbreak for the protection against strong dry wind of all-seasons-high-value crop: vegetables, flowers, orchards, vineyards, etc. Many Mediterranean regions suffer from the lack of woody raw material for local small and medium enterprise, particularly for high price goods: veneer, small tools. fences, etc. Cypress is particularly well adapted to such uses.
