Definition of criteria and indicators for the sustainable management of European eucalyptus stands

Obiettivo

The general objective of this concerted action is to give a contribution to the implementation of international conventions and regulations, namely the Helsinki resolutions regarding forest sustainability in the context of commercial short rotation forestry. Specifically it will adress eucalyptus forestry in Southern Europe. The specific objectives include:
1) definition of a set of criteria and related indicators, as well as the corresponding assessment methodologies, that can be used in commercial eucalyptus forests, based on scientific, technical and economic considerations;
2) design of a network of experi mental pi lot areas (EM EU - Eucalyptus Management Experimental Units).

The basic framework for this study will be a list of criteria/topics proposed by the preliminary workgroups in each participant country. In each of these preliminary workgroup discussions one of the criticisms is that the actuel proposed lists of indicators contain, referred as indicators (i.e. variables to be measured e.g. organic master content), thematic areas (e.g. nutrient balance) not quantifiable due to their nature. It is important, for each of these thematic areas, to identify real indicators (e.g. phosphorus content) that will contribute to qualify the correspondent criteria and, at the end, the sustainabiiity of eucalyptus forest. This definition, in practical terme, is not yet clone in a proper way and should be found in 2 stages:
1) using already available scientific and technical knowledge to select appropriate and suitable real indicators (through a comprehensive literature review); and
2) test experimentally the previously mentioned indicator selection. The concerted action will join Iberian and French industriel and forestry institutions (some of them involved on the Ibisus-for-plant commission) with technical expertise on forestry management and research institutions with large experience on environ mental (e. g . biology, soils , cl imate , ecology, social economics) and forestry management issues.

They will contribute to establish a scientific, technical, environmental and economical basis in order to define a set of criteria/indicators, their evaluation methodologies and monitoring costs. Expertise on data analysis (namely statistics and computing) and modelling will also be present in order to define a methodology for data processing to build up an evaluation sustainability model.
