A European study on animal, food and biomedical aspects of verocytotoxigenic ecoli including serotype 0157:h7 an emerging pathogen

Obiettivo

VTEC is a food borne pathogen which has already caused major problems in the US and Asia and is now rapidly coming to the forefront of food poisoning concerns in Europe, particularly in light of the outbreak in Scotland in early 1997 which resulted in the death of 20 elderly citizens. The severeness of the illness and the potential for fatalities as a result of poisoning by this pathogen means that it must be classed as a serious public health issue for the KU. Across Europe a large number of research and development programmes are underway to extend the scientific knowledge on this new pathogen with an end goal of improving and ensuring public health safety. At present there exists no unification or coordination of the research programmes being performed. This may inevitably lead to a duplication of effort. Understanding of this pathogen and establishing of means to control its spread requires that the problem be addressed by a mutidisciplinary team of food microbiologists, veterinary microbiologists, food scientists, public health and biomedical groups. In this project researchers from 30 different institutions in 12 EU countries (Ireland, UK, Norway, Sweeden, Denmark, Germany, The Netherlands, Belgium, France, Italy, Spain and Greece) covering veterinary, food and biomedical groups will join together to exchange and disseminate information from active research programmes on VTEC. The data will be collated and disseminated to the widest possible audience (including food industry in particular smes, safety surveillance personnel, clinicians etc.) Via booklet publications based on research meetings, a contribution based book on VTEC, seminars and workshops.

Subjects addressed in this action will include
1) methodologies for detection and typing of VTEC strains from animal, food and biomedical origin.
2) Epidemiology of VTEC infection in Europe in particular, identification of sources and transmission routes for infection.
3) Factors affecting pathogenicity of VTEC for humans, including verocytotoxin production and attachment mechanisms in vivo and in vitro.
4) Identification of factors affecting survival, growth and resistance of VTEC.
5) strategies for control of the pathogen and the potential benefits of haccp and risk assessment in this regard.
