Seed propagation of indigenous species and their use for restoration of eroded areas in the Alps

Obiettivo

More than 11 million people live within the 180.000 km2 large alpine area. 7 nations, 43 regions and 5.800 communities have part of it. Erosion is a basic problem found in the entire alpine area. Due to development in the Alps in recent decades, thousands of hectares of land in high altitudes have been affected by ski-slopes, lifts, tourists infrastructure, roads, improvements of alpine pastures, power stations as well as protective measures against avalanches. According to the latest estimates 5.000 hectares have to be restored yearly, more than 50.000 hectares of already restored areas need imperative improvement. In addition to this, natural erosion causes increasingly more problems. All of these factors are pose serious threats to the valley inhabitants (floods, bed material load to the valleys etc.). The present used cheap but unsuitable commercial lowland species are bred for grassland or lawn areas in lowland regions. They are not adjusted to those areas, their use leads to unsatisfactory results. The resulting ecological and economical damage is considerable: flora falsification, degradation of the vegetation, soil erosion, damage to the countryside, enormous costs for repairs, frequent reseeding, constant fertilising, maintenance. The use of seed mixtures of indigenous subalpine and alpine species (produced by farmers) in combination with improved application techniques, would help to avoid all those problems and will lead to a new state of the art in restoration of damaged areas in high altitudes. The successful large scale propagation of these species will be basis for a lucrative production-niche to thousands of farmers. The potential area for cultivation of indigenous species is estimated on 12.000-15.000 hectare. The participating scientific institutes have collected and selected material of indigenous species for restoration during the last years. Their selected material of 17 indigenous species and their experience ideally complement each other and will be used within this project. The combination of indigenous seed mixtures and optimised application techniques could lead to a considerable improvement in lasting protection from erosion in the entire alpine region, creating multiple positive economic and ecological effects. 3 Partners from institutes spread over the whole alpine area will investigate, together with a seed company and a restoration company, that a large area of seed propagation of selected subalpine and alpine species is technically and economically meaningful and that the combination of indigenous seed-mixtures and optimised application techniques leads to a considerable improvement in lasting protection from erosion in the entire alpine region, creating multiple positive economical and ecological effects.
