Obiettivo
Economic diversification is widely recognized as a key factor for the advancement of lagging regions. The aim of this research is to analyze entrepreneurship in the secondary and the tertiary sector of the mountainous areas in Southern Europe and to identify variables which work towards fostering or inhibiting it. Drawing on relevant literature on entrepreneurship and its impact on rural development, in general and on the development on lagging regions, in patricular, the project involves six interrelated research objectives.
OBJECTIVE 1 is to analyze the history and the characteristics of the establishments and the background of entrepreneurs.
OBJECTIVE 2 is to assess the sources and the availability of business capital both working and start-up.
OBJECTIVE 3 is to analyze the role of local leadership in stimulating entrepreneurial behavior.
OBJECTIVE 4 is to assess the influence of Macro variables sush aw government policies on taxes, regulatory compliance, labor cost and availability and the influence of Micro variables such aw information, communication, existence of sub-contractor services on business growth and performance.
OBJECTIVE 5 is to identify support and incubator organizations, to analyze their performance, and to assess the attitudes of entrepreneurs towards the importance, the availability, and the need for provision of instruments by these organizations.
OBJECTIVE 6 is to provide guidelines for the advancement of entrepreneurship in the mountainous areas of Southern Europe.
The proposed study will involve five mountainous areas in Greece, France, Italy, Spain, and Portugal Information on the establishments and the background of business owners in the study-areas will be collected surveying up to 150 business active in the fields of production/processing of local and traditional products, tourism and related services, communication and business support. The business survey will be complemented by a agencies influencing entrepreneurship in the study-areas. Both qualitative and quantitative forms of analysis will be used to attain the project's objectives. The project will last for 24 months.
