8th international conference on the chemistry and migration behaviour of actinides and fission products in the geophere

Obiettivo

The MIGRATION conference is known as the most important international conference in the chemistry of actinides and fission products in the geosphere with emphasis on the disposal of nuclear waste in geologic formations. The number of participants has increased from 240 in 1987 to 360 in 1999. The conference takes place alternately in Europe, USA and Asia since 1987. The conference papers are peer-reviewed and published in special issues of the internationally reknown journals Radiochimica Acta and Journal of Contaminant Hydrology. Therefore, the MIGRATION conference is accepted as an international platform for the exchange of research progresses in the field of radionuclide geochemistry. MIGRATION' 01 will take place in Bregenz, Austria, in September 16-21, 2001. Within the present proposal the organizers ask for financial support to prepare the conference proceedings.

The MIGRATION conferences provide an international forum for the timely exchange of scientific information on chemical processes controlling the migration behaviour of actinides and fission products in natural aquifer systems. Experiment and predictive modelling of these processes are the main topics of the conferences. The information generated from the MIGRATION conferences has led to abetter understanding of the migration behaviour of long-lived radionuclides in the geosphere, which is essential for the long-term performance assessment of nuclear waste disposal.

Until end of February, abstracts are collected and reviewed by the international steering committee in march 2001. Until April 15, 2001 the authors are notified and informed about presentation guidelines, and other organisational details. July16, 2001 the final programme will be distributed, papers will be collected until August 2001 and the conference will take place in September 16-21, 2001.

The MIGRATION conference will cover the following areas, including sub-topics:
A) Aquatic chemistry of actinides and fission products
B) Migration behaviour of radionuclides
C) Geochemical and transport modelling

Presentations will be poster sessions designed to encourage intense communication among the authors and participants.

Daily oral sessions will be opened with invited lectures followed by contributed papers within the scope of each session. Full papers of all invited and contributed presentations will be peer-reviewed by independent reviewers and in two review sessions of the international steering committee and, if accepted, published in the conference proceedings. The proceedings will consist of special issues of the international journals Radiochimica Acta and Journal of Contaminant Hydrology.

Milestones of the MIGRATION are:
February 28, 2001: Abstracts due;
April 15,2001: Authors notified, presentation guidelines, registration/excursion/hotel forms distributed;
July 16, 2001: Distribution of final programme;
August 31, 2001: Deadline for registration;
August 17, 2001: Full papers due;
September 16-21, 2001: Conference;
March 2002: Review process finalized;
July/August 2002: Proceedings in print.
