State-of-the-art document on the COrrosion BEhaviour of COntainer Materials

Obiettivo

This Thematic Network provides the opportunity to prepare a joint document integrating all relevant information (not only from EC-programmes, but also information from the separate national corrosion programmes) on container corrosion produced over the last 15-20 years. This document will meet the lack of review documents at international level.

This document will contain
(i) a summary of all relevant results on container corrosion of various materials considered as container material for the disposal of HLW and spent fuel in various geological formations (salt, clay and granite) under investigation in various European Countries,
(ii) a critical evaluation of the results/ data/conclusions gained up to now, and
(iii) a formulation of the needs for future R&D on container corrosion related issues.

The objective of the proposed Thematic Network is to prepare a state-of-the-art document, concerning the various aspects of container corrosion used for the final disposal of HLW and spent fuel, resulting in the formulation of the major needs for future R&D on container corrosion related issues.

To achieve the objective, joint meetings and open (informal) discussions between the various partners will be held on a regular basis. These discussions should also help in identifying common problems and joint approaches for future R&D.

The proposed Thematic Network is composed of five research organisations, i.e. SCK.CEN (Belgium), SKB (Sweden), AEAT (United Kingdom), INASMET (Spain), and FZK (Germany), originating from five different member states of the European Communities. The consortium is a very complementary group of research organisations since they all have specific expertise in the field of container corrosion in the different envisaged geological formations (salt, clay, and granite). The Thematic Network will be co-ordinated by SCK.CEN.

The aim of the Thematic Network is threefold:
(i) to collect all relevant information (from former European joint projects as well as from national programmes) produced over the last 15-20 years: general information (e.g. repository design, experimental techniques), a review of the evolution of the disposal concepts, the waste conditioning, types of container materials, etc., a review of the role of the container, a summary of the results and data obtained so far, etc.
(ii) to conduct in-depth discussions on the scientific content of the conclusions formulated under (i).
(iii) to conduct discussions (concerning the type of experiments, the choice of material, the use of modelling techniques to predict the long-term corrosion behaviour, etc.) in order to assess the needs for future R&D.

Two reports will be prepared by the co-ordinator: an intermediate progress report and a final report (state-of-the-art document). These reports will be commented by the various partners and discussed during several meetings. And based on their comments a final version of the reports is prepared by the co-ordinator.
