Obiettivo
The main goal of the Network is to improve the protection of the workers from ionising radiations both in the nuclear field and in a wide range of industrial, medical and research applications where ionising radiation and natural or man-made radionuclides are extensively used. To achieve that goal the Network will annually provide the international community with two issues of a European ALARA Newsletter, organise an ALARA Workshop and promote the development of ALARA feedback experience systems. The Newsletter widely distributed, will provide a link between all those concerned with ALARA, facilitate the dissemination of good ALARA practices and reflect some major aspects of the ALARA life in Europe. Each Workshop will be devoted to a specific issue, over a few days it will provide a forum for a few dozen experts to exchange information, identify problems that need further research and development, and recommend, where appropriate, improvements of the regulations or working practices. After the workshop a set of recommendations will be sent to the Commission, published in the Newsletter and available on the EAN WEB site.
Every six month one issue of the Newsletter will be published (the first at T_0+3, the sixth at T_0+33).
Once a year a Workshop will be organised (the first at T_0+ 11, the third at T_ 0+35).
The recommendations from the Workshops will be sent to the Commission (within two months after the Workshop). They will also be published in the next issue of the Newsletter and available on the EAN WEB site. Once a year the feedback systems will make available training or benchmarking material. The web site will be updated at least every month.
A Network Steering Committee Group will manage the Network with representatives from fourteen European countries, belonging to the industry, research centres or national regulatory bodies. Twice a year there will be a meeting of the Network Steering Committee Group. CEPN will act as co-ordinator of the network, with NRPB as supporting co-ordinator. The Network Steering Committee Group will identify National Contact Persons in European countries that are not represented in the Group. Every six months one issue of the European ALARA Newsletter will be printed (i.e. six issues during that three years period).
The contents of the Newsletter will be decided by the Network Steering Committee Group and will concern: evolution of regulations and judicial precedents, results of research, description of existing databases, analyses of dosimetric data, ALARA programmes, available ALARA tools, need for ALARA improvements, lessons learnt from incidents, and recommendations to EC arising from the panel sessions of the EAN Workshops (see Work-Package No2). Each issue will include one or two feature articles, as well as experts' viewpoints and ALARA information. Once a year, the Network will organise a Workshop of a few days in length. The subject will be selected to cover areas where the Network Steering Committee Group believes that significant improvements in terms of ALARA implementation may be found.
Possible topics for such Workshops are:
- Occupational Exposures Management in the Medical sector
-Decommissioning of installations
- Transport of radioactive sources-Remediation of contaminated lands after decommissioning
- The use of the Justification principle within Europe and its implications for ALARA-Orphan sources
The participants would be drawn from a wide spectrum of those involved in these areas. At the end of each Workshop some recommendations to the EC and other stakeholders will be drawn from the feedback from the sessions. The Network will support initiatives to improve feedback, particularly in the case of radiation protection in research reactors, or concerning radiological incidents in non-nuclear field.
The Newsletters, material and recommendations from the Workshops, and from the feedback systems will be made available on the EAN web site.

It will cover themes relevant to all sectors (e.g. potential exposures, internal exposure, ALARA and decommissioning), as well as specific themes (e.g. improved tools and training in industrial radiography, monitoring, assessment and optimisation of occupational exposures to Natural Occurring Radioactive Material, ALARA in the medical sector). The Network will produce a regular ALARA newsletter, distributed through various channels, such as the national contacts, the national radiation protection societies, the EC, the WEB etc.; it will be responsible for initiating proposals for scientific European ALARA Workshops, for the promotion of databases or specific research projects, as well as providing the Commission and the other stakeholders with recommendations concerning improvements of regulations, radiation protection techniques, risk management strategies and working practices.
