Obiettivo
The first part of this project is aimed to study the quantum noise of semiconductor lasers and squeezing it to produce nonclassical light. The intensity noise of semiconductor lasers is reduced below the standard quantum noise by feeding the laser with a regular electrical current and by controlling the single mode operation. To improve the single mode operation, two methods are being implemented: putting the diode laser in a longer optical cavity closed by a grating, and injecting the diode laser with another laser.
The next step will be to increase the observed quantum noise reduction by cooling the laser to liquid nitrogen temperature.
The third step will be to use the squeezed light for two experiments: a spectroscopy experiment on Cesium to demonstrate improved signal to noise ratio; a second experiment will use the output of the squeezed laser diode to pump a solid state laser. The output of the latter laser should also be squeezed.
