Filled carbon nanotubes in catalysis

Obiettivo



The aim of this research project is to explore carbon nanotubes as catalyst support. The hollow core of opened carbon nanotubes will be filled with nanocrystals of platinum metals and, for the first time, with chiral Rh-complexes. Since the opening of the nanotubes are considerably smaller (10-30A) than the internal diameter of the nanotubes (50-1OOA) bulky catalysts (> 30A diameter) synthesized inside the tubules will be trapped and heterogenisized. This could be achived by 'the ship in the bottle' methodology whereby the components of the catalyst molecule are introduced separately into the 'bottle'. The introduction of the easily accessible (Rh(n-C2H4)2(u-Cl))2 followed by addition of bulky and chiral tertiary phosphine PR3 to form (Rh(PR3)3Cl))will be examined. The resulting complex is sufficiently large to be trapped inside the tubules. The catalytic activity of the resulting materials will be investigated.
