Towards organic semiconductor devices design and synthesis of polymerbased field effect transistors and light emitting diodes

Obiettivo

The exciting field of polymer-based electroactive materials transverses the traditional barriers between chemistry, materials science and solid state physics. Organic materials may replace silicon in semiconductor devices such as Field Effect Transistors (FETs) and Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs). Recent efforts have led to conjugated polymers that are solution and melt-processible and hence may be readily spread over a wide area. Low charge mobilities, however, have hampered potential solid- state applications. Poly (alkylthiophenes) have shown promise in these applications and the our objective is to improve the effective intermolecular and intramolecular Pi conjugation by stretch alignment and sidechain modification. Incorporation of mesogenic sidechains will allow orientation in the presence of an electric or magnetic field. Molecular recognition elements should improve polymer strand ordering and lead to improved charge transport properties. The novel electronic and optical properties of these materials will be studied in active collaboration with industrial partners.
