Obiettivo
It is increasingly clear that it is possible to synthesize nanostructured materials assembled from atom clusters with a wide variety of unique or improved optical, electromagnetic and chemical properties.
The two parts of the project that we present here fall into this area of interdisciplinary science. First and foremost, we want to deal with the problem of Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering that appears in certain roughened surfaces and metallic colloidal systems, trying to clarify the controversy between electromagnetic and chemical explanations. Then, we want to study the optical properties of arrays of quantum dots or quantum wires, including the full electromagnetic interaction between the different objects.
Our intention is to apply a new theoretical approach to these problems, adapting a method that has been developed in the host group. The method is ideally suited to numerical work on the propagation of electromagnetic waves into systems of complex geometry.
