Sensitized genetic screen to identify new components of the Wingless signaling pathway in Drosophila
The role of the wingless protein in cell patterning in both the Drosophila embryo and imaginal discs has recently received a great deal of attention. However, while some of the components of the pathway by which the Wingless signal is transduced have been identified, (armadillo, dishevelled and shaggylzeste-white 3) most have not been recovered by classical genetic screens. Using wing margin patterning as an assay for Wg function, I propose to conduct a screen for mutations that decrease or increase the effectiveness of signaling by the Wg protein. Such an approach should allow me to identify new component of the pathway and therefore gain insight about the role of Wg in Drosophila development.
