Mechanisms of exhumation of continental high pressure - hp - metamorphic rocks in the Rhodope Massif - N. Greece

Obiettivo

Research objectives and contents
During collisional tectonics, profound deformation of the continental crust is associated with exhumation of HP-HT metamorphic rocks that were formed at the lower part of the thickened crustal bulge (ie. deeper than 35 km). The target area in the eastern Rhodope Massif (N-Greece) is a model region for the study of processes of tectonic exhumation of such HPHT metamorphic rocks in a thickened crustal bulge. In this area, thickening occurred within the framework of (Cretaceous to) Early Tertiary crustal collision of the Apulian plate and the Eurasian continent. HP-HT and the hosting metamorphic rocks preserve the petrological and structural record of various stages of deformation that occurred during and after collision, and at different crustal depths. Large ultrabasic HP-HT metamorphic complex that had a higher flow strength than the hosting quartz-feldspar rocks preserve the metamorphic and also structural record of the HP-stage to a higher degree and provide insights into the deformation processes and the mechanical behavior of deeper parts of a thickened bulge of continental crust. Structural geology, microfabric and petrological investigation methods used in an integrated and focused way, and in combination with already available geochronological data, provide insights into kinematics and duration of crustal movements associated with thickening and successive reduction of crustal thickness. The principle objectives of this study are: (i) to investigate the geometry and kinematics of structures that accounted for motions of material on the crustal scale, (ii) the thermal structure of the thickend crustal bulge at different instants of its evolution and (iii) the deformation mechanisms that determined the flow behavior of rocks at different depths and different stages of the overall tectonic evolution of this crustal section.
Training content (objective. benefit and expected impact) I wish to join the host institute as a visiting professor in a less favoured region (Greece). There are possibilities of giving lectures in the field of modern structural geology, tectonics and basics of continuum mechanics. Beyond that, there is a large potential for the exchange of personal experiences with those in the host institute doing research in the Rhodope. Researchers at the host institute have a broad knowledge in petrology of the Rhodope area which, by combining and integrating it with modern structural concepts will enlarge the understanding how tectonic processes are linked to exhumation of HP-HT rocks in a continental setting.
