Methodological Approach for the Development and Use of Urban Environmental Health Indicators

Obiettivo

Research objectives and content

Despite the growing interest in the identification of environmental health problems in developing countries cities, many difficulties remain in our understanding of these impacts partly due to methodological difficulties for quantifying them whereas information support for environmental health policies is needed. Environmental health indicators (EHI) may represent one means of meeting information needs for decision-making, in being useful to help set priorities for action and provide rationale basis for planning environment health interventions.

Two objectives are retained:
.Select a list of intermediate indicators as surrogates for health impact indicators that determine whether health related environmental conditions are improving or deteriorating over time;
.Select a list of urban environmental health indicators that monitor and evaluate the performance of urban environmental health sectors to permit the regular analysis of the effects of urban environmental health policies;
.The methodological process will require the commitment of several stakeholders in order to assure the validity and relevance of environmental health indicators, and this for up to 3 countries.

Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact)

- To study more deeply knowledge in environmental epidemiology;
- To take advantage in experiences of the host institution concerning the development and use of environmental health indicators, and their implication for decision-making.
