Fossil mantis shrimps in an evolutionary context

Obiettivo

Research objectives and content
The research proposed is aimed at resolving the evolutionary history of stomatopod crustaceans by focusing at their early representatives. The modern stomatopods are highly specialised predators exhibiting a suit of remarkable characteristics such as their ballistic raptorial limbs. The fossil stomatopod record provides important information about the morphological evolution of these animals. The Cenozoic and Mesozoic fossil stomatopod records have been the subject of my Ph.D. work and the proposed research should enable me to revise all the Palaeozoic forms. The Palaeozoic stomatopods show a very wide range of morphological deivergence and are therfore arguably the most significant in an evolutionary reconstruction of the group. With the data obtained from these studies a strong base will be created for a morphometric and phylogenetic analysis of all the stomatopods. This research should shed a clear light on the evolutionaty history of these remarkable crustaceans.
Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact)
My stay at Bristol Geology will increase my general palaeontological knowledge. I will certainly benefit from the experience present in Bristol Geology on both the practical work as well as on the theoretical work. Continuation of my scientific career in Bristol Geology will be an important step in my scientific and personal development.
