Sliding mode control theory - discrete control of uncertain linear continuous-time systems, non linear discrete-time and continuous-time systems

Obiettivo

Research objectives and content
Sliding-mode control of continuous time-systems with robust
continuous-time control techniques has been under investigation for decades world-wide. However, implementation nowadays is in discrete time. A mathematical proof of stability and robustness is especially complicated for discrete-time control . A recent literature study on discrete sliding mode control showed that current developments cannot deal with uncertainties which would be overcome via robust continuous-time control techniques. Work has been conducted by the scholarship applicant during the last weeks on discrete-rime sliding-mode control of uncertain, linear, continuous-time systems. A new control law has been proposed. which ensures robust stability and provides the advantage to abolish one of the main problems of discrete-time sliding-mode control, high frequency chattering. It has proved to be disadvantageous to design discrete-time controllers for continuous-time systems in the discrete-time domain disregarding the sampling process and its major influential factor, the sampling time. The developed technique has now to be applied to sliding-mode-controllers which use output information only or include dynamics as integral control or observer techniques. Case studies will be carried out to show the validity of the theory. As a first step. the simulation of a benzene production plant is under consideration. The second part of this project will be the research in the area of discrete-time control of non-linear systems.
Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact)
The applicant aims to achieve the PhD of the University or Leicester. He would like to have after that time proper skills in the mathematical analysis of discrete-time controlled uncertain linear or non-linear control systems, either discrete-time or continuous-time. As a result the applicant wants to be able to design discrete-time controllers to achieve robust control of the latter systems. For that. the applicant needs to advance his knowledge in: functional analysis, abstract algebra and differential algebra. For the practical part of the work, the applicant needs to develop his knowledge Ink chemical engineering. Furthermore. the applicant has to learn chemical engineering concerned programming languages, such as SPEEDUP. .As a result the applicant would like to be able to carry out research on robust control for non-linear systems either at industrial or academic institutions.
Links with industry / industrial relevance (22)
The relevance to industry is given through the consideration of a case study investigating robust control of a chemical plant for production of benzene. This work is carried out in collaboration with the department of chemical engineering Of Loughborough University. The research group has strong connections to industry. such AS Varity Perkins. Lacas Varity and Ford.
