Towards a New Theoretical Basis for the Training of Simultaneous Interpreters: The Role of Computers

Ziel

Research objectives and content

Bringing together various disciplines including interpreting theory, comparative syntax, relevance theory, general courseware development theory and extensive study of existing CALL (Computer Assisted Language Learning) applications. The project will aim to develop a "computer assisted interpreting training theory", thereby promoting the use of time-saving computer technology in the teaching of interpreting. The theory will be reflected in two programs for the teaching of simultaneous to beginners in interpreting. They will be based on a graduated learning approach. The use of audio and video clips, recording facilities and new voice-recognition software will ensure constant monitoring and immediate feedback.

Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact)

After receiving my first degree in Interpreting from the School for Interpreters and Translators of the University of Trieste. I believe that a training period of three years at the university of Hull, a leading centre in the production and dissemination of CALL materials, will greatly enhance practical understanding of the important role that computers can play in the Humanities.

Links with industry / industrial relevance (22)

In the light of ever-increasing interdependence between countries, a software package of the type envisaged would prove helpful in meeting the growing demand for skilled interpreters.
