Principal characteristics of the facility and of the support offered to users:
The VIVITRON is a large tandem accelerator currently operating up to 18 MV. Modifications to the charging system of the machine will take this up to 20 MV by the end of 1997. The reliability of the accelerator has recently been considerably improved under the supervision of an international technical committee. This allows the laboratory to increase the available beam time (and consequently the experimental activities undertaken) and to provide access to many new users of the associated neutron, charged particle and y-ray detectors. These are DEMON, ICARE, CHARISSA, VELOCITY FILTER and GAREL+. Up until October 1996 the laboratory hosted the y-ray spectrometer EUROGAM and will be the site of EUROBALL IV available from November 1998. The greater amount of beam time will permit the continued use of the full range of detectors after installation of EUROBALL IV. This request is, therefore, in relation to the extra outside users of the new detectors plus the additional users of EUROBALL IV who now collaborate due to the greater 'Europeanisation' of this previously bilateral French/UK project. The laboratory is also in an excellent position to provide the scientific, technical and logistical support essential for the successful participation in experiments by users who do not possess such facilities in their home institutes.
The association of the above-mentioned detector systems with the VIVITRON will place the laboratory at the forefront of research activities in the domains of nuclear structure and reaction mechanisms at Coulomb-barrier energies.
Quantity of access being offered and number of users who may benefit: Compared to the 1996 campaign, the expected increase in available beam time is of the order of 60 days, which represents 30 % of the new total of 200 days for each of the three years covered by the project. The present request is, however, based on the suggested maximum of 20 % of the total usage, i.e. 40 days per year.
Combining the researchers associated with new projects and the expected additional users of EUROBALL IV, we estimate an increase of around 1000 man-days of experiments per year. This expansion should benefit some 25-30 experimenters, eligible under the TMR programme. Travel and subsistence requests have also been calculated on the basis of 20 % of the total usage.
