Modelling of event driven distributed automation systems

Obiettivo

The growing complexity of real-time motion control configurations forced by sensor integration in unstructured robotics environments for example in the growing service robotics market and higher communication demands of systems e.g. remote diagnosis of machines leads to adequate development methodologies and tools to improve the time to market and quality for both projects and products. To fulfil these requirements the experiment aims to establish an object oriented technology with advantages in efficiency, reusability and quality in the working process of system and software development for complex centralised and decentralised systems.

THE EXPERIMENT

The experiment is corresponding to the baseline projects and products and to the overall strategy of PORT with "Phase I" rapid prototyping with powerful programmable components in hard- and software and "Phase II" volume dependent product optimisation based on portability of results achieved on the working prototype in a customer's project. It is structured in the steps:

- evaluation of an applicable object oriented methodology optimised for both sequential controlled and event driven multiprocessor systems with the needs of rapid prototyping and supported by a toolset for the complete software and systems production cycle
- introduction of the methodology step by step into the development process for the motion control products of port with small teams of software developers
- transfer of the experience of these developers into the whole project practice and product maintenance activities
- integration of the revised development process model within the existing quality assurance system.

EXPECTED IMPACT AND EXPERIENCE

Remarkable aspects for PORT's improvement are:

- get stable requirements of the motion control functionality as results of comparing different analysis models for single and multi processor configurations including FPGA and DSP to control single and multiple axes;
- create reusable executable design models directly derived from the analysis models on the development platform;
- govern the technology chain of code generation for targets from design models including the integration of existing libraries especially for higher communication and control;
- reengineering of the project experience of PORT compatible with the methodology / tool;
- risk reduced project management through optimised synchronisation of the technical development strategy with the linear project organisation model for project teams.

Commercial impacts are expected in:

- shorter development cycle times;
- higher quality outputs in software production;
- increased reusability of components for other projects;
- more human capital.

Anticipated benefits are also:

- broader possibilities for marketing;
- initialisation of training and consultancy business;
- increasing acceptance of the engineering offer.

Because real benefits from introducing new technologies are achieved in following projects measurements and comparisons with the experiment parameters (development time for models, effort for testing, ) are planned 6 - 12 month after the completion of the experiment.
