Improved computational tools through generic research

During the project NTUA had the possibility to improve its computational tools and validate them in several domains. The conducted generic research produced improved models accounting for the effect of Coriolis force on turbulence and such models were tested and incorporated in the software of NTUA. The occurrence of laminar parts in the flow and the transition of a laminar boundary layer to a turbulent one were researched and these phenomena were also validated against experimental data and incorporated into NTUA computational tools. The techniques of blade lean were investigated with the NTUA computational tools and corresponding possibilities to reduce losses were established. No application to the designs executed during the project’s lifetime was envisaged, judging that the resulting complications were incompatible with the project’s lifespan. The resulting tools were applied to the design of several components of direct interest to the industrial partners with excellent results.
