Obiettivo The discovery that protein aggregation plays a role in a number of different neurological disorders has thrust this phenomenon into the limelight as a very important current topic in the life sciences. The most important of the aggregation diseases are Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and the prion diseases, which include Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) and Creutzfeldt- Jakob disease. The prion diseases apparently propagate without transmission of genetic material, but instead by a mechanism that is closely linked to fundamental biophysical properties of aggregation: nucleation and seeding. This means that biochemical and biophysical studies can contribute in an unusually direct fashion to understanding the diseases and hopefully to the development of treatments. The key idea behind the proposed event is to expose the students to a highly interdisciplinary approach to protein aggregation. In order to truly understand this problem, the student or researcher must have knowledge from very different fields; from pathology through biochemistry and experimental biophysics to theoretical physics. As organizers our most important objectives will be to secure first-class lectures that covers these topics, and to insist on presentations that can be grasped simultaneously by students from the different fields.
