Baltic Summer School 2003: Neurodegenerative diseases: mechanisms and principles of rational treatment

Obiettivo

Advanced training of young researchers is a most important factor for the future development of biomedical science and this is particularly true for clinical neurosciences with their rapid expanding approaches in diagnosis and treatment with molecular strategies. Based on regional links, collaboration and expertise in science and education the Medical Faculties of the Universities of Copenhagen, Kiel and Lund have established the Baltic Summer School (BSS) to combine their efforts in training of young researchers. BSS_2003 realizes the ambitious aim to bridge from bench to bedside. The conferences takes into account the urging necessity to shape the neurobiological research for the clinical demands, and inversely, to provide clinicians with the molecular details underlying the behavioural-neurological deficits.

In consequence the BSS develops a well structured teaching platfom which guides the participants from: (1) pathological functions and signals of neurons and glia, and the corresponding regenerative-plastic adaptation to (2) the genetic burden of neurological disorder and the clinical relevance of neurobiological findings, and (3) culminates in the extensive molecular-neurological presentation of the major degenerative diseases such as Parkinson's, Alzheimer's and Huntington's disease, ALS and the neurodegeneration underlying psychiatric diseases.

These fields have dramatically expanded because of the rapid scientific development and the need to cope with progressive neurodegenerative diseases, which are an economic burden to Society. BSS_2003 is thus timely from a scientific, technological and socio-economic point of view. The project is important for understanding basic mechanisms, but at the same time highly relevant for the development of new therapeutic strategies in clinical conditions. Thus, it addresses a wide scientific community, from researchers in basic sciences to physicians working in clinical research.
BSS_2003 will be open for 65 young researchers from all over Europe. State-of-the-art lectures by international, experts in the neurobiological and neurological fields will illuminate the theoretical background and practical applications. Plenary and round table discussions, seminars, and demonstrations by scientifically profiled biomedical companies will supplement the training project. The proposal covers areas of research with high originality and potential practical importance and thus, promotes scientific excellence.
