Phytoremediation of contaminated soils and groundwater using mediterranean plants

Obiettivo

In this project the phytoremediation capabilities of specific salt-tolerant Mediterranean species on selected organic contaminants is to be investigated. In particular, we are interested in the remediation of (i) nitroaromatic explosive residues in the shooting range area of the Maleme shooting range (located next to the seawater); and (ii) petroleum residues in north-western coastal areas of Crete which are due to past oil-spill accidents or illegal dumping activities. In terms of plants, we are focusing on indigenous salt tolerant plants such as the partially salt tolerant variety of oleander or Tamarax sp.. Currently, we have the expertise and equipment in place to analyze soil or aqueous samples and to do basic monitoring of key metabolites within the plant. However, we do need the additional expertise in the physiology of salt-tolerant plants and tracking the fate of xenobiotics in the plant system (contaminant transport and subsequent metabolism and/or sequestration within the plant). The ultimate objective is the development of efficient and cost-effective remediation technologies for contaminated areas with increased salt content. The Marie-Curie Fellow should have a Ph.D. in Plant Physiology, Agronomy, Agricultural Engineering, or equivalent and a good publication record as well as expertise in the project areas. The Fellow is expected to carry out innovative phytoremediation research and collaborate with staff members in the laboratory. Excellent knowledge of the English language is required. At the time of selection, the fellow must be 35 years old or less (allowance is made for childcare or military/civil service) and cannot be of Greek nationality or having worked for more than 12 months during the past two years in Greece. The work will be carried out at the Laboratory of Biochemical Engineering &Environmental Biotechnology in the Dept of Environmental Engineering at the TU-Crete (Chania, Greece). The laboratory has been established in 1997 and is currently conducting several externally funded research projects. At the present time the research group is comprised of 5 researchers, 1 laboratory technician and 10 graduate students. All equipment required to carry out this project is already in place. The selection process is expected to finish by the end of September 2001 and the Fellow is expected to join by Dec. 31, 2001 the latest. Remunerations about 1700 €/month plus 400 €/month as mobility allowance. Travel expenses from and to the country of origin are also covered.
