Physics and applications of optical discrete solitions

Obiettivo

Recently, the study of solitary waves in discrete systems has attracted a great deal of attention. A previous collaboration between the University of Glasgow, where I earned my Doctorate, and the Weizmann Institute of Science, led to the first experimental demonstration of discrete solutions in arrays of coupled nonlinear wave guides. Discrete solutions resemble continuum spatial solutions, however, due to the lack of translational and rotational symmetry, they exhibit several novel dynamical properties . We demonstrated some of these effects; for example, the locking of moving discrete solutions, the generation of optical Bloch oscillations, and the possibility of tailoring the sign of diffraction. In this project, I propose to extend these studies and to investigate applications to all-optical processing. I shall design samples to study the dynamical properties resulting from discreteness. I shall introduce defects in the otherwise homogeneous arrays in order to create a potential barrier that can be either repulsive or attractive. The solution impinging on a defect site may be totally transmitted, reflected, or split into two. Later, I shall fabricate and test glass wave guides arrays to be used as optical compressors in the spatio-temporal solution regime . Finally, wide arrays will be characterized to study discrete solution interactions. The project will improve the understanding of nonlinear discrete systems and open up the possibility of novel all-optical switching mechanisms.
