Modelling and experimental investigation of 3-dimensional laser forming of metallic components

Obiettivo

The aim of the project is to investigate a 3-dimensional thermo-mechanical model for analysis and prediction of fundamental laser forming mechanisms .The objectives mentioned below are required for realized research work.
Objective 1: Familiarization with laser equipment at Liverpool Laser Group
Objective 2: Analysis of mechanisms of laser forming (e.g. Temperature Gradient Mechanism (TGM), Buckling Mechanism (BM), Planar upsetting or shortening mechanism) .
Objective 3: Experimental study of laser forming effects which result from basic geometries of laser energy input, namely e.g. short line in central area, circle and arc of larger thin sheet.
Objective 4: Development of a 3-dimensional thermo-mechanical model for the analysis of the laser forming mechanisms.
Objective 5: Testing of the model with experimental results (prediction of laser forming mechanism ( s ) ; prediction of rate, direction, overall degree and uniformity of bends for primitive geometries)
Objective 6: Extension of model and experiments to complex geometries (ex-tension to full width line bends on thin sheet (taking account of clamping forces & edge effects) ; extension to a series of lines, arcs and circles( to achieve uniform laser forming of saddle shapes and other double-curvature shapes); extension of model to predict the degree of forming in simple correction of distortion in structures (extrusions, hydro-formed tubes etc) ; extension of model to the prediction of laser forming of thick section metallic plate. Possibility of carrying out a research in The University of Liverpool will give the applicant a great opportunity to deal with technology and science at a high world standard level. Their laboratories are excellent equipped for complying of research project, e.g. wide range of high-power industrial lasers & several CNC workstations with up to 6 axes of work piece movement. Ability to work with the world famous scientists of applicant interest area will contribute to his scientific development as well as exchange scientific knowledge, ideas and information. The applicant will learn new methods of laser forming and extend forming result for applications in the correction of distortion (e.g. for parts that have been hydro-formed, but re-quire adjustment to match to associated mating components) . The applicant can gain new valuable experience and share his experience gained in Laser Techniques Laboratory in Poland as well as his professional experience e.g.in M.A.N. Company. Results of the realized research project will be the main part of the applicant future habilitation thesis. These results will be also very important for development of host experimental researches concerning laser forming.
