The Ny-Ålesund Large Scale Facility (LSF) is located at the Ny-Ålesund International Arctic Environmental Research and Monitoring Facility situated in Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard, Norway. The Ny-Ålesund LSF is organised as a consortium between the Norwegian Polar Institute (co-ordinator), the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research (AWI), the Norwegian Mapping Authority (NMA), the Norwegian Institute for Air Research (NILU), the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and the Kings Bay Company (KB).
The Ny-Ålesund LSF consists of five facilities: The Atmospheric Climate Research and Biological Research Facility (NP), the Atmospheric Air Research Facility (NP/ NILU), the Ozone/ Stratospheric and Climate Research Facilities (AWI), the NERC Research Station for arctic environmental research (NERC), and the Space Geodetic Research Facility (NMA). The general infrastructure, housing and lodging is provided and maintained by KB.
Access is provided free of charge and includes all infrastructural, logistical, technical and scientific support normally provided to external users. Grants are restricted to cover travel and subsistence costs for field campaigns or laboratory work for up to 2 months duration, or shorter visits involving the installation of well automated instruments for operation over a longer time frame.
Application:
Calls for proposals are announced twice yearly in Nature, through the program web-pages, by announcements in research journals and newsletters, by direct mailing to institutes, research councils, international research organisations and relevant scientists.
Submission deadline for project proposals to the Ny-Ålesund LSF is normally set to 1 September and 1 March, with subsequent evaluation and selection of projects by a selection panel consisting of internal and external experts. Proposals should be submitted preferably in electronic form to email-address: nyaa-lsf@npolar.no or by post to the address: Ny-Ålesund LSF Secretariat, Att. Project proposals should include:
1. The application form. This can be obtained at the www homepage of Ny-Ålesund LSF at http://www.npolar.no/nyaa-lsf/(si apre in una nuova finestra) or by contacting the Ny-Ålesund LSF secretariat;
2. A scientific description of the project consisting of - a descriptive title of the project, - a clear description of the scientific objectives and the work content of the project, - a description of possible links and complementary value to existing research projects, - a reference list;
3. CV(s) of the researcher(s) (including a list of relevant publications).
Only research teams conducting non-proprietary research in the Members States of the European Union or in Associated States are eligible for support. Priority is given to User Groups who have not previously used the facility and who would normally not have access to it.
