Description:
It is the aim of this network to co-ordinate the activities and organisation of eight low-energy ion beam facilities located in seven different European countries and to improve the ease of accessibility and the quality of services offered to external and internal research groups. A close collaboration concerning the organisation of the infrastructures, a standardisation of ion beam characterisation, an increased flux of information, the development of common and complementary technologies, as well as the improvement of the user-infrastructure relationships is initiated by means of meetings, workshops and working visits. The work within the network is organised in six different projects: Information policy, management and quality, on-line access to the experiments, common tools and multi-coincidence detectors, ion beam production, and beam control and deceleration. The ongoing activities and the progress made in these projects is documented in detail on the LEIF-web page 'http://www.leif-network.org'. In the long term, the collaboration should prepare the field for the creation of one European, 'distributed' low-energy ion beam facility.
