A next-generation experimental setup for reaction studies with relativistic radioactive beams

Obiettivo

Description:
Objectives:The objectives of the proposal are to design and partly implement an advanced experimental setup for Reaction studies with Relativistic Radioactive ion Beams (R 3 B) at the GSI laboratory in Darmstadt, Germany. R 3 B will be the only facility worldwide where radioactive-beam experiments at relativistic energies can be performed and as such will provide unique research and training opportunities for the European (and the international) community of physicists in the fields of nuclear physics, astrophysics, and applied science. The project is a collaborative effort of universities and research institutes from five European countries and continues a tradition of international cooperation that has already proven fruitful during almost a decade of operating the fragment separator FRS at GSI.
The project consists of several sub-projects, for which the major achievements are listed below:
1) A design study for a super-conducting fragment separator ("Super-FRS") with much larger acceptance for secondary beams than the present FRS has been carried out. This involves a new ion-optical design that guarantees the necessary purity and efficiency.
2) Detailed temperature-profile and hydrodynamical calculations were performed, which are essential for the technical design of a high-power production target that can withstand short pulses with high intensities of relativistic heavy ions available from the new SIS synchrotron.
3) Layout of a large-acceptance magnetic spectrometer for momentum analysis and mass identification of the reaction products with a gap width that allows the observation of both neutrons and fission fragments behind the magnet.
4) Construction of a liquid-hydrogen reaction target adapted in size to the dimensions of the secondary beams from Super-FRS.
5) Construction of a ring-imaging Cerenkov detector (RICH) for velocity measurements of reaction products.
6) A new concept for a data-acquisition (DAQ) system and front-end electronics that facilitates the read out of the detectors installed in the R 3 B setup.
7) Development of a Monte-Carlo code that allows the simulation of reaction experiments with the R 3 B detector setup.

1) Large-acceptance fragment separator: Three reports describing the ion-optical layout of the separator in conjunction with beam transport lines to the different experimental areas, an energy buncher stage, and studies of different ion-optical modes.

2) High-power production target: Six reports containing results and description of detailed calculations of temperature profiles and intensity limits for the fast and slow extraction modes foreseen for the future high-intensity accelerator, conceptual design of the production target for slow extraction, hydrodynamical calculations for the high-power pulsed beams, influence of beam focusing, investigations on the possibilities for test experiments. A seventh report on this subject describes the investigation for a possible injection scheme into the storage ring using individual ion cooling.

3) Large-acceptance magnetic spectrometer: Technical paper describing the key parameters of the spectrometer and a concept for a super-conducting large-gap dipole. Final technical design report. Evaluation report by international review committee, preliminary time schedules and cost estimates for test of model coils and the full-size magnet.

4) Liquid-hydrogen target: The target has been completed and mounted at GSI and is fully applicable including the control system. Meanwhile, two experiments with the LH2 target have been carried out, one aiming for proton-elastic scattering off exotic nuclei, and one experiment with the lH2 target implemented in the R3B reaction setup. Both experiments have shown an excellent performance of the device.

5) Advanced detector systems: Documentation describing the performance of the RICH detector; Report describing a test experiment at GSI with heavy ions including readout and analysis; Conceptual design of new front-end electronics for fast readout in the R3B DAQ scheme.

6) Advanced data-acquisition system: Two technical papers describing the structure and components of the DAQ system; Report describing the final concept of the DAQ system including new development of front-end electronic for LAND; Summary report describing the DAQ system, design of a prototype front-end board as well as test results with this prototype.

7) Simulation of key experiments: Report defining the key experiment and describing the concept for the simulations Report describing the developed Monte-Carlo code for simulations of the complete R3B setup.
