Hadron-electron separator for ZEUS at Hera

Obiettivo

During 1991, the electron - proton collider HERA came into operation at DESY in Hamburg, Germany. The ZEUS collaboration with members from 49 organisations in 12 countries, is running one of the two large HERA experiments. The research programme at DESY is critically reviewed and scrutinized twice yearly by an international advisory committee.

Physicists and engineers from the Moscow State University (INP-MSU) have been actively collaborating with the ZEUS group on: detector research and development, detector construction and installation, experiments at the HERA collider and physics analysis. Since 1993, INP-MSU has become a member of the ZEUS collaboration.

An upgrade of the ZEUS detector, the forward hadron electron separator utilizing large area arrays of silicon diode detectors, was begun. A major contribution to the technical development, construction (both in Russian industries and at INP-MSU), installation, operation and physics analysis is expected from INP-MSU. Essential preparatory work in collaboration with Russian industries was successfully completed, demonstrating that crucial and substantial contributions from INP-MSU are realistic.

The research will consist of the following stages: the construction of ~ 10 m2 of silicon diode detectors in Russia; the construction of components for the readout of the detector such as pre-amplifiers, large area multi-layer boards, analog readout electronics, digital electronics, control electronics and infrastructure; the assembly, quality control and installation into the ZEUS experiment at HERA; the data acquisition at HERA; and the analysis of the data with physics interpretation.
