Dynamics of coherent excitation of atoms and molecules: basic problems and applications

Obiettivo

The teams from Kaiserslautern (DE), Dijon (FR), Ashtarak (AM), Kiev (UA) and Krasnoyarsk (RU) propose to engage in joint research involving theoretical and experimental work and building on an already existing collaboration with recent joint publication of DE, FR, AM and UA teams. The project concentrates on the further investigation and on the application of the recently developed technique of coherent population transfer by counter-intuitive interaction of two radiation fields with atoms or molecules (STIRAP) and on specific problems related to the coupling of bound and continuum states by strong coherent radiation. Each team has acquired and demonstrated (through publication of their work) specific expertise in one of the relevant topic. The proposed research includes basic and applied work. It will lead to the further development of ideas, which have emerged, from the recent joint work of the teams (such as the active control of remaining small losses, work on coherent population transfer with coupling through continuum, investigation of the laser induced continuum structures in helium, analysis of the tripod system). New applications are planned as an important part of this project.
In particular, a new type of matter wave interferometer, which promises to be of unprecedented robustness for precision experiments, will be developed. The planned initial applications of that instrument include direct interferometric measurement of a topological phase. Another important and ambitious task is the development of the novel sources of metastable hydrogen and rare gases atoms using Stark chirped rapid adiabatic passage (SCRAP). The SCRAP method when applied to the 1s-2s transition in hydrogen, may serve for the production of much needed, intense Lyman-a source. A high intensity Lyman-a source is of importance for high-resolution spectroscopy and for monitoring cold atomic ensembles, such as hydrogen Bose-Einstein condensates. New schemes of high-resolution spectroscopy for molecules, which have no accessible bound electronically excited states, for which therefore the application of standard high-resolution laser spectroscopy methods fails, will be explored as well.
The research program is organized in two parts with ten related topics and three or more teams involved in each of the tasks. The experimental efforts will be mainly undertaken by DE and UA teams, but the FR team will contribute as well. The NIS teams will mainly undertake the theoretical effort, with specific and important contributions by members of the FR team. The collaborative nature of this project is emphasizes by proposing a scheme of regular mutual visits of members of the teams in the NIS and INTAS states. All five leaders consider these visits to be an important integral part of this project.
This collaboration will lead to a significantly improved understanding of specific and important aspects of the process of coherent population transfer and of the physics of coherently driven bound-continuum interaction in fields with an intensity of up to 1010 W/cm2. The work will result in new and potentially very important application of those techniques. It will allow the NIS teams to strengthen their basis for conducting long-term competitive research in theory and experiment and will therefore enhance their chances to eventually attract for their work from national and international sources.

Programma(i)

Programmi di finanziamento pluriennali che definiscono le priorità dell’UE in materia di ricerca e innovazione.

Argomento(i)

Invito a presentare proposte

Procedura per invitare i candidati a presentare proposte di progetti, con l’obiettivo di ricevere finanziamenti dall’UE.
