Advanced detection and interpretation of oceanic and atmospheric signatures in dual polarization airborne and spaceborne imagery

Ziel

Main objectives of the proposed project are
- to investigate the physical mechanisms that give rise to different appearances and properties of signatures of oceanic phenomena (like internal waves in the ocean) and atmospheric phenomena (like internal waves and convective cells in the marine atmospheric boundary layer) in microwave radar images of the ocean at horizontal (HH) and vertical (VV) polarization;
- to develop a comprehensive numerical model which is capable of reproducing observed radar signatures of oceanic and atmospheric features and their dependencies on radar frequency, incidence angle, and, in particular, polarization;
- to determine the sensitivity of radar signatures to parameter variations and, in particular, characteristic differences between signatures of oceanic and atmospheric phenomena in dual-polarization radar imagery, which can be exploited for the development of advanced automatic feature detection and classification algorithms;
- to develop and demonstrate an automatic detection and classification algorithm for signatures of oceanic and atmospheric features in radar images of the ocean, and to investigate the capabilities and limitations of such algorithms.
This work is particularly relevant for the interpretation of data from the ASAR system on the ENVISAT satellite, which will have the capability to acquire dual-polarization (HH and VV) synthetic aperture radar imagery ("Alternating Polarization Mode"). Successful execution of the project will result in a prototype feature detection and classification scheme for application to ASAR dual-polarization imagery of the ocean and other radar data.
The main activities in the research program can be summarized as follows:
- A comprehensive database of radar images of oceanic and atmospheric phenomena from various sources and corresponding additional information like wind, current, and temperature data, depth maps. will be set up to provide a reference for modelling activities and case studies.
- A numerical model for the three-dimensional wind field of convective cells and rolls in the marine atmospheric boundary layer (MABL) will be developed.
- An improved theory for the interaction between surface currents, waves, and winds will be developed, and an existing numerical wave-current interaction model will be upgraded to accommodate the new theory.
- Existing models for the radar backscatter from the ocean surface will be upgraded for realistic behaviour at very high and very low incidence angles, where resonant Bragg scattering theory alone is not adequate.
- A comprehensive model validation study will be carried out with the improved models and the reference data from the ADI'DAS database.
- A comprehensive sensitivity analysis will be carried out to determine the sensitivity of radar signatures of oceanic and atmospheric phenomena to various parameters and to determine the most significant differences between radar signatures of oceanic and atmospheric phenomena.
- Based on the results of the previous tasks, improved algorithms for an automatic detection, classification, and interpretation of features in radar images will be developed, tested, and demonstrated.
These developments are relevant for the automatic detection of radar signatures of oceanic and atmospheric phenomena and a variety of other applications.
Dissemination and exploitation of project activities and results is considered a very important task, which has been given a dedicated task number in the research program (section 3.1.4.1). Aside from publications in scientific journals and presentations at regional and international conferences, the ADI'DAS consortium seeks direct contact to potential end users of the remote sensing techniques developed in the project. It is planned to hold workshops with potential end users, which can take place within the framework of progress meetings at several locations. Purpose of these workshops is to demonstrate to potential end users the possibilities and advantages of remote sensing techniques and to obtain information from the end users about their requirements (phenomena / parameters of interest, accuracy, resolution, coverage, economic constraints). In addition, a public ADI'DAS web site will be set up, and information packages will be prepared for interested scientists and users.
