Ziel
The essential objective of the project is to develop a rapid instrument for on-line determination of optimal flocculant dosage in water and wastewater treatment and other processes, giving the possibility to make one measurement of flocculation efficiency within 10 seconds of dosing.
Subsidiary objectives, which will enable the principal objective to be achieved are:
study of the effect of turbulent pulsation of various intensity on kinetics of dissolution (mixing) of a drop of a concentrated solution of high molecular polyelectrolyte (flocculant) in water and transfer of the polyelectrolyte molecules to the surface of suspended particles;
investigation of kinetics of flocculation of fine particles of various origin under the influence of intense, highly non-uniform hydrodynamic fields in a specially-designed Couette flocculator;
development of a highly sensitive opto-electronic system for measuring the effectiveness of flocculation of suspensions and emulsions in the early stages of floc formation;
development of an automatic control system for the instrument, intended to define the optimal dose of the flocculant in the processes of water and industrial wastewater treatment.
The formulated objectives of the proposed project will be fulfilled under the following programme of research works:
Theoretical study of the effect of turbulent pulsation of various intensity on kinetics of dissolution of a drop of a concentrated solution of polyelectrolyte (flocculant) with molecular mass up to 2x107.
Design of a flow-through Couette flocculator with variable rotation regime for producing non-uniform hydrodynamic field with the average velocity gradient G = 103-105s-1.
Design and development of the optic-electronic system for measuring the effectiveness of flocculation after passage through the Couette flocculator.
Producing, testing and adjustment of a prototype flocculator unit.
Producing, testing and calibration of the prototype opto-electronic flocculation monitor.
Theoretical study of the effects of turbulent pulsation of various intensity on kinetics of the transport and adsorption of molecules of polyelectrolyte (flocculant) to the surface of suspended.
Study of the effectiveness of the primary flocculation process in suspensions of particles of various origin (clays, metal hydroxides, oil emulsions and mixtures thereof) under conditions of vigorous hydrodynamic treatment (G - 103-105 s-1) in the flocculator. Selection of the hydrodynamic treatment regime, which ensures the maximum effectiveness of the initial flocculation.
Development of the automatic control system for the flocculator and opto-electronic monitor intended for on-line determination of the optimum dosage of flocculants.
Production, testing and adjustment of the pilot instrument for rapid, on-line determination of optimum flocculant dosage.
Development of design specifications for a practical instrument based on the previous studies.
Scientific and technological advances arising from this project should bring practical benefits to water and wastewater treatment processes and to a number of other operations which require the use of flocculants.
