Obiettivo
The aim of this project - The Typology of Intonation, Stress and Lexical Tones in Slavic, Baltic and Germanic Languages (TYPIST) - is to stimulate and coordinate research on the tonal prosody of three major language groups, Slavic, Baltic and Germanic, all of which contain languages with rich tonal and intonational systems. There are three interrelated research themes. The first theme is concerned with the mechanisms that influence the origin of lexical tone and the development of typologies (lexical and intonational). While there are several theories for the origin of lexical tone in different languages, very little has been done in terms of typological comparison of European languages in order to improve the basis for evaluation of theories and the determination of separate or common origins. Once introduced, tonal systems tend to develop a dialectology, greatly varied as in e.g. Basque, or more rigidly constrained as in e.g. Scandinavian. Work towards understanding the conditioning factors in developing typological variation will also be carried out within the project.
The second theme covers investigations into the relationship between intonation, stress and lexical tone in languages from the three groups. The study of tonal effects at the syllabic and segmental levels, known from several areas, also belongs to this theme. These studies involve critical assessment of functional and instrumental correlates of stress and intonation, where in-depth analysis of individual languages and dialects will be undertaken, with an eye to teasing apart the contributions of different prosodic components to the overall prosodic realization. Moreover, related dialects where the one has lexical tones the other doesn't will be studied and compared.
The third theme is concerned with improving the empirical base for research on tonal phenomena. This will be achieved by phonetic and phonological data collection and explicit comparison of similar structures from the various languages. A concrete goal subsumed under this theme is to create a prosodic database. This work will develop in tandem with research on test methods and evaluation procedures (experimental, comparative).
Since much of the research is of a basic nature, the findings will be an important first step towards future typological work on tone and intonation. The database is obviously an open-ended undertaking. Theoretical and empirical findings will be published in part as a monograph high-lighting the typological aspects. Other publications will be in the form of journal articles and working papers. The over-arching consolidating perspective of the project is typological, based on the shared conviction that the fastest way to make progress into poorly understood areas of intonation and lexical tone is through comparison of systems, supported by high-class instrumental phonetic methods of analysis.
