Theoretical and experimental study of versatile autodyne lidars as candidates for space borne earth observation missions

Obiettivo

The Project is aimed to determine characteristics achievable for cw and hybrid versions of the space borne autodyne lidar and to elaborate recommendations for their possible usage in earth observation missions. Among scientific objectives of the project are: theoretical, experimental and simulation studies of cw and hybrid autodyne lidars operation in different regimes, determination of the lidars' limiting characteristics, simulations of the airborne and space borne lidars operation through the atmosphere, determination of retrievable scale of earth and atmospheric characteristics and comparison of those with achievable on the base of passive/active IR devices.

Within the Project framework the following research activity is planned. Theoretical model of autodyne lidar operation in different regimes will be developed in close cooperation with relevant experimentation. The experimental setups enjoying the specially developed stable CO2 wave guide laser will be used to determine minimal detectable signals at wide range of experimental and natural conditions, including those typical for space borne operation. Simulations of airborne/space borne lidar operation in different regimes will be performed to arrive to estimation of the typical signal magnitudes. Special efforts will be devoted to determination of the lidars sensitivities as means to measure characteristics of the atmosphere and underlying surface. Comparison of the characteristics obtained with those achievable with other active/passive IR techniques will be done. Different versions of the airborne and space borne autodyne lidars applications for earth observation missions will be investigated to arrive to determination of their optimal usage variant.
Anticipated results: theoretical model of autodyne lidar operation in different regimes, relevant simulation results providing a solid foundation for subsequent/parallel experimental verification and optimisation of lidar schemes and relevant regimes of operation, determination of minimal detectable signals at wide range of experimental and natural conditions, including those typical for space borne operation, computer based model of the lidar operation allowing estimations of the airborne/space borne lidar potential as instruments to retrieve characteristics of the atmosphere and underlying surface. Recommendations for optimal usage of the autodyne lidars in space borne applications for earth observation missions will be elaborated on the base of performed investigation.

Programma(i)

Programmi di finanziamento pluriennali che definiscono le priorità dell’UE in materia di ricerca e innovazione.

Argomento(i)
