High precision low-cost colorimeters and spectrophotometers based on liquid crystalline optics

Obiettivo

Our main target is to develop different kinds of colorimeters and spectrophotometers with a higher accuracy than classical three filter colorimeters (e.g. target accuracy Dx, Dy £0.005) at a lower price than competing systems containing array spectrometers, which cost EU 10000 or more. The colorimeters and spectrophotometers will be developed for use in industry like quality control of production of cathode ray tubes (CRTs), light emitting diodes (LEDs) and liquid crystal displays (LCDs).

The measuring heads will be hand-held in order to allow measurements at hardly accessible positions. Our further targets are:
to enable measuring the light of narrowband emitters with a spectral resolution and precision of the dominant wavelength determination of less than 3 nm;
to fulfil industrial requirements the sensitivity will allow the measurement of displays with a luminance of 1 cd/m2 or light emitting diodes with a luminant intensity of 0.5mcd. Special measuring optics will be developed for these purposes;
to provide the dynamic range of the measured light higher than three orders of magnitude;
to achieve a measuring time less than 1 s when the maximum sensitivity is required.

The colorimeters will follow the standards published by western organisations like Commission Internationale d'Eclairage (CIE) and the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA)
Due to several interchangable optical heads they will in addition be able to measure photometric values (luminance, luminous intensity) together with the color coordinates within one single measurement.

As a further aim we want to compare the optical standards of the NIS countries with them tracable to western institutes of standards. This will help the NIS countries to come closer to the world market.
The project is triggered by the increasing requirements to colorimetry and spectrophotometry, e.g. by the invention of bright blue and white LEDs (which will enter the market for lightning technique, and possibly will replace traditional halogen tungsten lamps in many applications) or the increasing use of liquid crystal display. The colorimeters and spectrophotometers today found on the market are either not suited to these applications or are too expensive for use in NIS and often even in European industry. This project wants to fill this gap.
Besides the objectives and expected results stated above the project will lead to the development of new kinds of liquid crystalline optics which can replace classical optics in various applications at lower costs. Some LC optics will provide completely new properties (like optical gratings tuned by low voltages).

The project is divided into five partially overlapping and interacting main tasks:
T1: development of the components of the colorimeters (excluding LC optics);
T2: development and testing of the liquid crystal optics necessary for the different colorimeters;
T3: development of the optics adapted to the measurement of luminance (for display testing) and luminous intensity (for LED testing);
T4: testing and characterisation of the different colorimeters;
T5: Summary report and transfer of technology.

In addition the yearly and final reports we will publish all important results of the project e.g. on a web-site, at conferences and in publications.
In order to reach the aims stated above a consortium of seven partners (three teams of INTAS countries and four from NIS countries) with a clear distribution of responsibilities was established:
The team of the State Scientific Industrial Association (SSIA "Metrology", Kharkiv, Ukraine) and Diospek GbR (Germany) have years of experience in optical measurement techniques. They are responsible for the development of general outline of the colorimeters, their calibration and characterisation according to NIS and western optical standards and the adaptation of the colorimeters to several applications like display and LED testing.

In addition Diospek GbR is responsible for the co-ordination of the entire project. The teams of the Institute of Applied Physics Problems, Minsk, the Dep. of Physics, Chalmers University of Technology, Goteborg, Sweden and the department of Engineering, University of Exeter are responsible for the LC optics, where the Minsk team will fabricate most of the optics, the Swedish team will be responsible especially for the LC shutters and the LC material, and Exeter team will perform most of the calculations on LC. The teams of the State Scientific Research Institute of Standardization, Metrology and Certification "ISARI" (Tbilisi, Georgia) and from the Institute of Radio receiving Devices (Minsk) will develop the electronics and the software necessary to drive the colorimeters (e.g. operation of shutters, tuning of LC interferometer and grating, data acquisition and evaluation). By this way the co-operation will bring an added value due to the specific experience of each partner. By this way the co-operation will bring an added value due to the specific experience of each partner. Knowing the European market very well the German team supports practical scientific research for different applications.
