Emissions from aircraft engines include a large variety of gaseous and solid effluents. Although these emissions are small compared to other anthropogenic surface emissions, (at the present time they represent about 3% of all anthropogenic sources), they are mostly released in the very sensitive region of the upper troposphere/lower stratosphere. In fact, aviation represents the major source (if not the only one) of anthropogenic pollution at high altitudes, where background concentrations of these trace substances are low and their residence times long. The unique location of aircraft emissions and the predicted growth of air traffic demand require that particular attention is given to accurate predictions of the nature and of the quantities of emitted species (gases, ions and particulate matter).
This project aims at a better understanding of the formation of trace gases (including aerosol precursors), chemi-ions and particles (soot, volatile aerosols) in the engine and in the exhaust plume of a subsonic civil aircraft. It includes seven teams and proposes a multidisciplinary approach to these problems by bringing together specialists of different fields (aeronautics, physics, chemistry), using different but complementary approaches: experimental work and modelling studies. It is divided in four tasks which deal with:
- The elaboration of a reaction rates data base for HOx, NOx, SOx chemistry, chemi-ions and soot precursors formation during the combustion,
- The development of a model of trace gases, chemi-ions and soot particles formation and evolution in a gas-turbine engine;
- The Modelling of the plume aerosol micro-physics and contrail formation;
- The collection of fresh soot the and the determination of the surface properties in relation with contrail formation.
The main outputs of this project will be a better understanding of combustion processes, in relation with the engine characteristics, reliable and consistent emission indices for trace gases and particles which will be of great importance for engine manufacturers and for scientists in charge of modelling the upper troposphere in order to study and possibly to reduce the effect of aviation on the environment.
